Fix You

Filed under: news — xocea at 12:46 pm on Friday, October 31, 2008

When you try your best but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
and ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

High up above or down below
when you’re too in love to let it go
but If you never try you’ll never know
Just what your worth

Lights will guide you home
and ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears streaming down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears streaming down your face and I

Tears streaming down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face and I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Economic Panel at PSU

Filed under: economics, environment, news — xocea at 10:51 pm on Wednesday, October 29, 2008

I just got out of a panel discussion sponsored by the PSU Economics department, and it left me all the more depressed about the future, international markets, and human nature. We live in a world that seems to be declining in so many ways.  It seems like neoliberalism in the context of globalization is very misguided.  I’m beginning to wonder if we should all offer Marx an open apology.  Bring on socialism for all I care.  We obviously can’t be trusted to make responsible decisions without the threat of consequences.

Environmental, socioeconomic, political and ethnic inequalities abound.  International economies are built on these inequalities, and nothing seems to be put on the table to solve increasingly rampant stratifications.  MNC’s from our MDCs dominate the development of LDC’s in ways that only benefit the wealthy classes and nations.  How can we be so shortsighted as to think that this is how the world should work?

A Tree Grows In Brentwood

Filed under: news — (author unknown) at 9:05 pm on Wednesday, October 29, 2008
Hagy Belzberg is fearless when it comes to tweaking the tenets of modern design. But the Belzberg Architects principal was less intrepid when good friends asked him to plan their house on a prime 1-acre lot in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles. "No family, no friends," Belzberg says, stating his usual cardinal rule of practice.

“Portland’s Japanese Gardens. Another view of this much photographed maple. There is a sense of magic under the canopy of this tree.

This is one of many great fall pictures of the Japanese Gardens floating around flickr, and one of my favorites. Fall is the perfect time to visit the gardens and see these amazing colors. There is also a free day on November 11.
